Though Paul makes a good point, economics is always the deciding factor, N
scale is much more popular than it used to be as confirmed by Schuyler's
comments. Gone are the days when you only had a few road names and pieces of
equipment  to choose from.  Though still not as plentiful as HO scale
things, N scale has made great strides in popularity and availabilty. It
just still stinks when something new and exciting comes out and it's only
available in HO. The percentage of items that happens to is ever shrinking,
but I can't wait till it's zero percent. Todd
