Re: (erielack) Montville, more!

I agree with the writer to an extent about adding additional stops on the
Boonton Line, although that isn't stopping NJ Transit from bringing back
the Mt. Arlington Station stop, which will slow down the wonderful
high-speed trip from Lake Hopatcong to Dover. Nevertheless, the major
problem that the Boonton Line faces is that the tradition of regular
service has slowly been eroded over time and, has been pointed out in
previous posts here, dates back past the EL and into DL&W times. The
challenge will be to reverse that trend. Eventually, the trend will be
reversed and stations like Montville may return. By that time, however,
the Boonton Line may already be completely electrified, as I think that
there was such a contingency built into the re-electrication plan for the
Morristown Line. If electrification takes place, together with THE Tunnel,
the possibility of a one-seat ride into Manhattan will exist along the
western part of the Boonton Line...at which point the potential for the
explosion of ridership along the Boonton Line, similar to what happened on
the Morristown Line with Midtown Direct service (via the Kearny
connection), will probably occur.

Hi all,

Here are some comments from a friend of mine that I think the rest of the
list would appreciate seeing.

The 2 Saturday Boonton Line round trips were discontinued in June 1982,
so that was under NJT (not NJDOT) control, but Conrail was still the
operator (NJT Rail took over 1/1/83).

Any rider of a Boonton Line train who boards from west of Boonton will
tell you that another station on the Boonton line is NOT needed. All
that will do is slow down the trip time even more. If Towaco and
Boonton stations were overcrowded, perhaps it's worth considering, but
they are not. Recent NJT ridership statistics show that Towaco has less
than 150 daily boarding riders and Boonton has less than 100. These
rank in the bottom 12% of all NJT station boardings. There is surplus
parking at both of these stations.

Just a point of comparison - Metropark and Princeton Junction both have
more than 7,000 daily boarding riders.
