Re: (erielack) What was the Shopper's Special...?

Scranton-NYC service is a Catch-22 situation in that political support from
Scranton is needed to get the service going, but the "extra" 30 miles from
Mt. Pocono to Scranton pulls the passenger/mile ratio way down, as there
would be very little ridership west of Mt. Pocono, at least initially. One
possible scenario would concentrate service on the eastern end of the
Poconos and provide token service (and maybe initially no service) to
Scranton. My feeling is that the Scranton interests won't stand for the
"no service" scenario. However, plans for a casino in the Poconos is, if
you'll pardon the expression, a wild card in all this and may play a role
in pushing this project along. Of course, this may cause the Atlantic City
interests to become involved again (at they did during the late 1970s when
there were rumors of gambling coming to the Poconos that helped kill
efforts to save the tracks on the Cut-off). The threat this time, however,
is much more real, and the Atlantic City interests, while still strong,
aren't as omnipotent as they were 25 years ago.

There will be no need to deadhead cars up to Scranton on Friday
night; the cars for the weekday commuter service between Scranton and
Hoboken will be based in Scranton. After all, they'll start running
about 3:30am to get people to work.

Several advocacy groups have urged that service operate at least
every three hours throughout the day and on weekends, not just during
rush hour. Having spent the money to rebuild the railroad, it seems
silly not to USE it!
