Money - yes.  Your tax dollars - And railroads' tax dollars - at work!
Principally, Route 17, and then I-80 - speeding the trucks from dairy to market!

I think it was a combination of three things:
Money - yes, cheaper
Money - yes, the rails found out it wasn't really covering costs Time - trucks were faster to the destination.
