Re: (erielack) CWR on the EL(2)



Thermite welds were used when I was involved in building track for the new 
Waterfront Line built for the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority 
in '95-'96.  Stick rail was delivered by ship into the docks at Cleveland, 
unloaded and pulled to their respective locations (since the Waterfront Line 
ran along the edge of the Dock property).  I don't recall the exact lengths 
as delivered, but alot of welding followed once pulled into place...

Also, Conrail had a dedicated facility at Locknow(sp) near Harrisburg that 
essentially welded 1/4 mile lengths of salvaged stick rail into welded rail. 
When I was still living in NJ and a member of Tri-State chapter, we had a 
tour of the facility sometime in the 1980's...I don't know if the facility 
is still operating, but was pretty interesting at the time...
