(erielack) The Hayshaker
By 1975 both NJ&NY jobs were based at Croxton. #1671 was called at 0830 and served the upper end, #671 called at 0900 and served the lower end. Locals like these did piddle away much of the profit from the line-haul, along with the yarding process.

My late father, W S McDonald, was a station agent at Thiels, Spring Valley, Nanuet and lastly in 1966 at Park Ridge. In those days there were two jobs on the NJ&NY handling the local freight. One from Croxton and one originating in Spring Valley. This last one would shove north two or three times a week with coal and agricultural products for the State hospital in Theils. Six or so cars was average. It would then swap its train with the job out of Croxton around Hackensack and return to Spring Valley doing any enroute work (cars received from the lower end job). Lederlie's in Pearl River kept that job on 6 days a week. Theils also figured into this equation. When Theils and Lederlie's fazed out there was no justification for two jobs on the line and this Hayshaker was the solution. Man, all that dead time for meals you don't wonder why the industry has gone for these "logistic centers" with trucks performing the final delivery. Peddler freights like the Hayshacker w!
