This siding was of course the last remains of the Hillsdale Yard of the NJ&NY, removed about 1980 or 81. Was racing my brain for memories of a 5-year old living in the Pascack Valley (who of course loved trains) and remember when Conrail came through and re-did a lot of the track at the time. I think Park Ridge lost its passing siding then too, which was cut back to a shorter siding by Bratt and Doxey Building Supplies (track ripped up 2001; last buildings of Bratt and Doxey gone a month or so ago) I also have faint memories of telegraph poles lining Broadway with ragged wires hanging from them, and semaphores at Bratt and Doxey, and Woodcliff Lake Station. In Tim's day (and mine in a stroller) the Hayshaker likely stopped at places like - -Kuiken Bros Lumber in Emerson (last freight customer still active north of Hackensack, see a boxcar or lumber car there almost every day) - -Tanis Concrete in Hillsdale (a bit north of the station, Waste Mangement there now) - -Burroughs Corp in Park Ridge (large typewriter supply factory in Park Ridge, demolished summer 1986, now site of Park Ridge Crossing condos) - -Bratt and Doxey Building Supply, Park Ridge, out of business early 1990's. Hartel Plumbing and Heating also accepted deliveries of pipe and ductwork at that siding. - -Former Dexter Folder Co. Pearl River, NY, across the street from the station. Has a sizable siding, don't know what was in the building in the 70's though it has long been a warehouse and a candy company uses one end. - -Lederle/ American Cyanamid, Pearl River/Nanuet border... huge pharmaceutical complex, now known as Wyeth, does not receive freight anymore. Once received coal and materials like cardboard boxes by rail. - -There was a lumberyard just before the Nanuet Mall, just north of the Junction site - -Beckerle Lumber in Spring Valley, near where the PV Line met the Suffern-bound Piermont Branch. - -----Original Message----- From: erielack-owner_@_lists.elhts.org [mailto:erielack-owner@lists.elhts.org] On Behalf Of Timothy Costello Sent: Saturday, October 07, 2006 12:17 AM To: Richard Pennisi; erielack_@_lists.elhts.org Subject: Re: (erielack) The Hayshaker As I recall, the Hayshaker would frequently tie up in Hillsdale for lunch. Living in Hillsdale was great, as we had one of the run around sidings north of Hackensack. Work trains, inspection trains and other equipment would tie up in Hillsdale overnight.
