Favorite era? 1960-1976, in Huntington, IN. Dropping Dad off at the depot,
to work the next freight out, listening to G'pa (Signal Gang 51, based out
of Hammond) talking with the local signal gang members at Huntington Yard or
just sitting on the pile of old ties at "WR", watching the trains running on
the "Erie" or "Wabash" (Funny how nobody EVER called them the "EL" or
"N&W").
Now, modeling? On my layout, it's 2001. The employees bought the EL (With
help from ATSF), got some loans and picked up some trackage that Conrail
dumped (St. Louis, anyone?). Intermodals, stack trains, auto train traffic
(The Chevy truck plant set up outside Huntington, instead of Ft. Wayne),
steel scrap trains (for the Ohio mini mills) and the occasional Roadrailer
run, along with unit coal trains handed off by primary interchange partner
BNSF. SD60/SD60M/SD70I with SD40-2M (Repowered SD45/45-2/P45, but they're up
for replacement soon) and GP38-2 are likely to show up on point, with
runthroughs from BNSF/CN/CP and (Rarely) UP. Business is good and the EL is
turning a nice profit.
Realistic? Probably not... But, the new engines look outstanding in GMY and
the "Flying Saucer' Roadrailer to Chicago, is always on time!
