Dear All, To answer Al's question about the lineage of the URHS "Erie" E8 units: The 835 was originally PRR 5788A, being renumbered to 4248, which it held for Conrail, NJ DOT and NJ Transit. Unlike the group of former PC E8 units that were conveyed to NJ DOT when Conrail took over from PC (4246-4305), this engine was retained by Conrail along the 4256 (PRR 5796A), 4039, and 4063 (X-NYC, same numbers). For reasons unknown to me, it was traded to NJ DOT for the 4249, which would run at other points on Conrail's commuter network until finally being retired in 1980. At that time, Conrail was also using the former EL 825 in commuter service, carrying number 4014. The 4248 was rebuilt at Elizabethport, NJ where it received the freight pilot it currently has, and later became property of the URHS and repainted into its current scheme. The funny thing about this engine and its partner is the painted-on nose door, which threw me for a loop the first time I saw them in person. Its a good enough job to fool you until you get up close! The 834 was built as New York Central 4076, and carried that number into Penn Central ownership. After most of the former NYC E8s were sold to Amtrak, this engine along with several others was renumbered in the 4320-4328 number series, which was above the highest numbered X-PRR unit. I do not know if there was a 4329, but it should be noted that the former Southern E8s began at 4330 suggesting that 4329 was used at some point. The 4076 became the 4323 and was one of two E8s that was given the NJT disco-stripes scheme with the white carbody (4334-Southern/AGS/NO&NE 6914 was the other) and it was eventually rebuilt with a small generator in place of the No. 1 prime mover to provide 480V HEP Power for trainsets waiting at Dover during the M&E conversion project (more EL content). I'm sorry if we got a bit off topic here, but I hope this helps, Phil _ELRRco_@_AOL.com_ (mailto:ELRRco@AOL.com) The Erie Lackawanna Mailing List Sponsored by the ELH&TS http://www.elhts.org ------------------------------
