Does this involve any former EL routes? http://www.stargazettenews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060921/NEWS01/609210326 Schumer urges railroad to reduce train speeds Star-Gazette September 21, 2006 U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., on Wednesday urged the Norfolk Southern railroad to slow down its trains that now travel through Elmira at 50 mph. Elmira City Council was told earlier this week that the speed of trains traveling through the city was going to increase Wednesday from 30 mph. City officials have expressed concern about safety. In a news release, Schumer said he has asked the railroad to reconsider its plan and address city officials' concerns. Schumer said he asked the railroad to send a representative to Elmira to meet with city officials and community leaders. Elmira Mayor John Tonello said he sought help from Schumer, U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., and U.S. Rep. John R. Kuhl Jr., R-Hammondsport. The railroad unilaterally increased the speed of trains without giving the city any information about safety issues or the quality of the tracks, he said. The increase also poses a safety concern beyond Elmira, Tonello said, noting there are at-grade crossings immediately outside the city in Southport. Gary R.
