Re: (erielack) Marion Intermodal Terminal



Paul and List,

I don't ever recall 2ndNY (or any other eastbounds for that matter) making 
such a move. Between us and the PC, there was just too much traffic to tie 
up the joint trackage like that. I do remember the "yard job"going to the 
UPS and getting outbound loads and empties which were taken to the yard and 
presumably spotted on the manifest trains during crew change, etc. The only 
train that was allowed to tie up the railroad was the CX99. Marion cars were 
(usually) spotted on the head end. The CX99 would stop east of the Scioto 
switch, the power would cut off and pull up to clear the switch. The yard 
job, which was waiting on the spur would then open up,  pull out, back up to 
the train and get the Marion consist and then push them back into the spur 
to the UPS facility. The Croxton power would then return to his train and 
head for the Marion yard. This move usually only took about a half hour. As 
for the wye, it was a remnant of the war years when both the Erie and the 
PRR had access to the ordinance plant. If I recall correctly, the PRR side 
of the wye had been pulled up long before the EL started servicing the UPS. 
Probably our gain for I'm sure the guys in black (N&W) would have jumped on 
that opportunity had they the chance.
