Rich Pennisi kindly responded to this today in two parts with the referenced 
photo:

Did F3s have diaphrams? "American Models Limited, I believe, makes the 
diaphrams for Genesis units. And yes, there were diaphrams on the F3's up 
until the mid 60's."

Were the diaphrams gray or black?  "It might be best to get the American 
Limited Models for Stewart rather than Genesis as the Stewart are closer fit 
and look more realistic.  The Genesis ones tend to leave a big gap between 
the units unless you can get the units closer together with various 
couplers.

As I recall, the diaphrams on DL&W were gray. Under EL the stripes only 
folded over the ends of the units a few inches, the rest of the rear portion 
was black as were the diaphrams.

Here is photo of an EL B unit 6342 former DL&W 634 showing the black ends of 
the units during EL days.

I'm afraid this is the best I can do as proof at this moment.  I hope this 
helps."
