"AMC" is the Advisory Mechanical Committee, a group which was put together by the Van Sweringen brothers when they owned the ERIE, NKP, C&O and PM, and which set pretty much uniform mechanical standards for the four roads. If you have not read "Invisible Giants" by Herbert H Harwood, you most definitely should. It's a fascinating book, covering both their careers as real estate developers in Cleveland, and their building a railroad empire which went far, far beyond those four roads. They wanted to do in the late 20's what is coming to pass now, with major mergers into large regional roads. And BTW, the Van Sweringen era, and the AMC, will be major topics at the joint meeting happening this fall in Cleveland, organized by the Northern Ohio Association of Railroad Societies (NOARS). ELHS, NKP, ELDCPS, C&O and I believe some representation of the PM group will all be happening on the last weekend of September. Registration information is available at www.erielackhs.org.
