This is a complaint that's common to virtually all railroads (and other
businesses) that get taken over or merged into a larger company. To the
winner goes the spoils. Many NYC folks felt that way in regards to the PC
merger. EL folks, as mentioned here, felt that way in regards to the CR
merger. Even DL&W folks felt that way in regards to the EL merger. Even
M&E folks, going back more than a century, reportedly felt like that when
they were pulled into the DL&W sphere.

Thanks for doing a good job of answering my question, Paul. I might add
that the former EL guys I talked to didn't see that it was for the greater
glory of Conrail. To them it was more like the EL got raped.
