This is something I've always wondered and never had the answer to, and now you've answered it - the intermingling of DL&W FT component units. The new EL In Color Vol. 6 shows back-to-back (and drawbarred) EL 6041/6044 (ex-DL&W 604A/604C), and states that these two units were used in pusher service up to the end of their lives on the EL.
