The FT in A-B configuration usually came with a draw bar between the units and a coupler on the outer end of the B unit. The A-B-A set usually had all drawbars. When the more compact draft gear came along, many FTs were retrofitted. So where did the DL&W get an A-B set with a drawbar on the B unit if not from an A-B-A set? I'm not aware of the Lackawanna or the EL ever retrofitting any of there FTs. To the best of my knowledge they all stayed the exact same way they were delivered, through there whole life. What makes you think they were? Because of the small number board that was only visible at a 90 degree angle it was difficult to tell what FTs were in a photo. But you could tell this: When two sets of 651s were put together to make an ABBA you can always tell in photos by looking down the four units and the separation between the two B units would be much greater than the virtual non existent separation between the A and B unit. When you looked down a photo of the 601s in an ABBA set there was no large separation between any of the units cause they were all draw barred.
