It was seven years ago to the date of May 31, 2006 that the NYS&W ran
it's last regular service intermodel trains. The #258 made it's way off
the Erie Mainline and down the Hudson Secondary to Lehigh & Hudson River
Railroad trackage. I remember watching that train like it was yesterday.
It was Memorial Day. From the dispatcher announcing that it was his last
"D" for Conrail over the radio to, holding a Foster's "Oil Can" in the
passing, saluting a "cheers" to crew, and finally watching the head end
pass at 23:58 and the marker at 00:01 at Hamptonburgh Road crossing. The
railroad change hands from Conrail to Norfolk Southern right before my
eyes. The "stacks" were gone.
Fast forward to the date mentioned above. Turmoil on the rails the
afternoon and night before on CSX's Chicago mainline and NYS&W's own
trackage have brought a short jolt of life to the once proud Erie
mainline and the Susquhanna. Whenever disaster strikes to the major
northeastern railroads, the NYS&W has been there to try and help relieve
the the congestion that can form from traffic build ups. Although
performance on these sudden detour moves hardly ever receive Five Stars,
they due help. Today the NYS&W is handling CSX train Q164. A monstrous
9000ft long train of double stack containers headed for eastern cities
and the New Jersey Ports for continued travel overseas. It left Syracuse
off the Chicago line at around 23:30 the night before making a slow trip
down to Binghamton, but once leaving Binghamton on the old Erie, things
looked bright. A slight delay at Port Jervis to wait for passenger
traffic that has taken over what was rightfully "the freight main" and
the train was off and running. Though this one did not make the turn at
Hudson Junction like the last 258, it did make a special daylight
appearance on the spectacular Moodna Viaduct at Sailsbury Mills NY. This
is the original NYS&W route into New Jersey and this location was a
weekly "must have" shot for anyone chasing the old C430s and Green SD45s
down the "Tier".
At first I shot train #62. It was out of Port Jervis at 11:30.

I thought the 164 might follow him to Otisville and wait for the
westbound passenger. That didn't happen.
The dispatcher held them at BC for the that westbound's arrival at 12:15.
Then the tranquility of one of Orange Counties last peaceful areas was
about to be broken. 14 hours after leaving Syracuse, the moment arrives.
No, they are not C430s or MLW 636s or even an F45. There is not a
"yellow jacket" in sight, but it is a Susquehanna train with a
Susquehanna crew right out of Binghamton making their way to New Jersey
just as they did 20 years earlier. Just as they did 7 years earlier
carrying the same container traffic. So sit back and take in a rare
sight as the NYS&W soars 120ft over a creek baring the same name as the
bridge at one of the northeast's most spectacular railroad locations.
