A package arrived at home yesterday - the latest book from Morning Sun: "Erie Lackawanna in Color, Vol. 6: The Color Photography of William J. Brennan" We're seen Bill Brennan's work in his recent "Trackside in the NJ Commuter District" book, and the first 25% of this book appears to be a continuation of that volume, focusing around the Hoboken/Jersey City terminal area (a neat and unexplained shot of a trio of new GP35s at Hoboken Terminal is laid out in a two-page spread), as well as more shots of the EL "navy" (tugs and ferries). The book then goes out, following the Erie side first, as far as Susquehanna, and then highlighting the Farewell to the PA's trip. The book returns to New Jersey and then follows out the DL&W side, which primarily covers the Morris & Essex side with plenty of shots of the Phoebe Snow, all the way out to Scranton. The DL&W side has less freight action since most of photographer Brennan's images were taken prior to 1970 (before the traffic shift). Sadly (for me) there was only one shot of the Boonton Line, and it was actually at Boonton. The next section, "Erie Lackawanna After Dark", is a fine selection of night photography (though I will take exception with author John Canfield's statement that Bill Brennan is "the O. Winston Link of nocturnal railroad color photography" - I think Preston Cook holds this title, but to each their own, I suppose - this, of course, isn't meant to diminish the quality of Brennan's work) Another chapter covers "The Great Viaducts", and then there's a chapter called "Additional Points of Interest." There are many "zingers" in here, including my favorite shot in the book: A set of black/yellow freight scheme EL FA1/FB1 units leading a set of L&NE power (three FA1s, one FB1 and an RS2) out of Hornell, the latter units destined for the L&N. Some Marion area shots (concentrating on the last days of the PAs) finish out this chapter. The book concludes with a "Selected Roster Shots" section featuring Alco switchers, Baldwins, early scheme Train Masters and other classic road power. Photo reproduction is terrific, and the layout is clean (and no more "power split by the book gutter" issues, too!) This one's a "must get," IMHO. - Paul _____________________ Paul R.
