Fw: (erielack) Modeling Questions-Erie Trailers

This didn't make it into the digest for some reason, so at the risk of duplication I'm resending.

Paul had commented to me recently about the GATX G-85 cars. In checking my reference on the Clejan cars, I made an interesting discovery. It turns out the G-85's, produced beginning in 1959, were designed to handle both Clejan and conventional trailers (as well as containers) and that's why they have the unusual design where the center sill is elevated above deck level and has a flange along the top edge. They were supposed to help alleviate the switching headache at the ramps wherein Clejan cars had to have their own dedicated ramp track. Ironically they hastened the demise of the Clejan system because being dual purpose, terminal personnel found it easier to just load them with standard trailers; also the added decking negated much of the weight advantage of the earlier 79' Clejan cars and eliminated a major incentive to use the system at all. Several cars in the North American pool with NADX and NIFX reporting marks were fitted with steam pipes and carried REA trailers and containers on the headend of some EL passenger trains in the 60's.

Yep, I'm sure. There are 4 unpainted models in boxes in my basement!
