RE: (erielack) Re-numbering some Erie F3 units

Right.

Do you have a copy of Erie Power?  There's a photo of 710 ABCD in there that depicts what you want
to see.  In the beginning there was a small "709A" on the back panels of the A unit, "709B" on the
corresponding panel of the B unit, and so on.  The dynamic brake "slots" are toward the front, that
is, toward the A unit it's mated to.  IOW, the units ran like this:

Where x marks the couplers, and < marks the "front" of both A and B units.  Some other roads had the
Bs reversed.

Later on, which on this list was discussed (could find this thread in the archives, probably) that
the lettering on the rear corners was made larger.  To my surprise, this wasn't until the late 50's;
I had always assumed it was soon after delivery.  My suspicion is that the reason the lettering was
enlarged was that they gave up on keeping the sets in ABBA formation, and noting engine numbers got
tricky when a random B unit was mated with other units, so larger numbers were used.  If the B's
were running with their mates, there wasn't much issue about which B unit it was trailing the A, you
could assume that 709B was trailing 709A.
