However we werediscussing The Bronx, not Manhattan. Paul B Randy writes: > B&O, DL&W, Lehigh Valley and Erie also had freight stations on the west side of Manhattan, in the neighborhood between 23rd Street and 30th Street. They also were freight stations and tram tracks, with the miniature yards to serve them. LV and Erie did service the enormous warehouse which stood between them, but the basic traffic moved to and from the railroads by truck. Their was no cnbbection with the NYC "High Line"; they were competitors. And the ERIE's yards there were extensively (and admirably) covered in the Diamond by lister Vince, who must be wondering if anybody read it . . . . SGL" All these compliments! My head cannot fit into my layout room now! You guys have motivated me to repay you with the attached recent photos of the 28th St area. Photo Termstores1 - The east facade of the Terminal stores warehouse building. This is the side that the NYC entered when its track came south down 11th Ave. from the 30th Street yards. Note that the building still touts free cold storage! I wonder if anyone has tried to take them up on it lately. The entire building has been renovated, and is almost 100% occupied with tenants now. This area of Manhattan is hot real estate. Photo Termstores2 - the inside of terminal stores showing the "alley" down which the two tracks of the interior sidings ran, on either side of the steel support columns. Apparently, according to the building's maintenance people, the rails and ties are still present under the raised floor. Also visible are some rail loading doors. 28thSt1 - Soon all traces of the Erie and DL&W presence here will be obliterated. New York City is building a park here, at the precise site of the Erie's float bridge. Those pilings out in the water stabilized the carfloats as they were pushed against the floatbridge apron. Enjoy.
