Ed,

Indeed the Van's had an interest in the W&LE and were maneuvering to own 
it out right two decades before the NKP finally leased it. They were 
part owners along with the NYC, B&O and Pennsy I believe (from memory).

If you haven't read the book "Invisible Giants" about the Van's written 
by Herb Harwood, I recommend it to anyone interested in the rise and 
fall of the Van Sweringen brothers. It was a fascinating read.
