"How long can Nicholson and other magnificent feats on engineering last?" Google "Pont du Gard" if you want some idea of how long a similar masonry structure can last. "Could the bridge ever be replaced?" Sure. The question is, would we want to spend the $$ to do so? I'd like the Kinzua Viaduct to be rebuilt, but apparently the owner (State of Pennsylvania) doesn't think it's worth the money to do so. "Will we be alive long to enough to witness it?" I think that's a function of how badly the structure is maintained. "Will there be even the same sort of railroads in the future when this is a concern?" Define "same sort of railroads". Steel wheels on steel rail? Probably. Operating on the same economic paradigm as the DL&W when the viaduct was built? Maybe not. I have to give you credit...this is probably the first April Fool's joke I've ever been subject to that made me realize just how much I took something for granted.
