(erielack) Calendar time!

As usual, two days early, but what the hey. :)

The April EL calendar features, IMHO, a great shot at a great location: Eastbound commuter train 1062, led by RS2 909 in very fresh paint, leads two classic DL&W Boonton coaches off the Morris & Essex lines on to the Boonton Line. The photographer lucked out in that a spot in the clouds highlighted the Alco while the surrounding scenery is in shadow.

The photo was taken when the Boonton Line was still double-tracked (note the second track and intertrack fence at right). It also shows that by this time, track maintenance was not quite up to DL&W standards of decades past - the ballast looks like it's in desperate need of cleaning here. Other neat details to point out: The "Danger No Trespassing" sign at the left, the boxcar in the distance at the box factory, and the substation at the right (still there today). The neat lattice-truss catenary structures over this formerly four-track section of the Morris & Essex also is a "signature" feature of this part of the line.

Ahhh... to be back in those days. Today's track through here is pristine, heavy rail with deep ballast, but the "character" seen in this photo is sorely missing. :(
