I'm not one for perpetuating urban myths, but I'll give you what I have on
this thing, for whatever it's worth.
An associate from the Museum where I volunteer was on business in Korea,
circa 1988 (I can verify the date with him, but I know that's pretty close).
He is absolutely certain that he saw a Pacific with a Vanderbilt tender,
from the automobile in which he was riding. (Were there any other engines
in Korea with a Vanderbilt? I don't really know) He was not in a position
to go back and get details (business trip and he wasn't driving).
As a matter of background, I consider him to be of the highest integrity,
and not one to make up this sort of story. He is a knowledgeable steam fan,
so he knew what he was seeing.
My own personal conclusion is that if he believes he saw a Pacific with a
Vanderbilt tender, then so do I. Any further theorizing beyond that point,
is left to the reader.
