My guess is the K-1 was cut up and melted down many years ago. Here's a site that shows the reason the needed that Erie K-1 after the Korean war! With Memorial Day only a few weeks away this would be a nice time to think of those who served our country from 1950 to 1953 in the "Forgotten war" where 33,741 american solders were lost. Add to that 2,827 non-combat losses. (We are at 1,500 + and counting in Iraq).
Here's a great site that shows the (TMRS) military railroad operation in South Korea...

The Erie K-1 was reported to have been displayed in Imjin-gak. This area is located 50 km northwest of Seoul. To comfort the 10 million South Korean people separated from their families in North Korea a tourist resort was constructed. It is the location of the "Bridge of Freedom" visitor center. And yes, It is VERY close to the DMZ. Still a very dangerous place today. This website shows a steam locomotive on display there... could this have been the "Erie" steam engine people thought that saw? Were most of the people who actually spotted the locomotive "Non-railfans"?
