To Ken Clark:
ELDCPS has not changed or modified our mission and vision. In the short term,
our mission is to restore our equipment for operation. Midwest Locomotive at
Kansas City is making excellent progress on former EL Diner 741. Although we
would like to have the equipment already in place and in operation, the shop
must take the necessary time to perform quality work.
The Society is well on the way to fulfilling its "mission" of sponsoring a
1960s era Erie Lackawanna through-line passenger train. Our "vision" is to offer
the same atmosphere as if EL was still operating through-line passenger
service, and the Dining Car Department was staffing and stocking the Diners. With
two Diners, two Pullmans and a coach, we have the equipment necessary to
fulfill our "mission and vision." A guest on our train will be able to walk from
the coach or Pullmans to the Diner, and enjoy the atmosphere and cuisine once
offered to travelers on "the Friendly Service Route." You may enjoy your meal,
which will be served on authentic Erie or DL&W china, while riding on former EL
trackage. I do not believe we can get any more accurate then that. We will be
offering a historically correct "experience," and not just a "Dinner Train."
Of course, ELDCPS Directors are working with and coordinating with businesses
in the Scranton area who will assist us. The actual operation will be under
the direction of the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad and the joint Rail Authority.
VP Mike Steinberg is working on completing the next issue of the Diner
Digest, our Society newsletter. This issue will focus on the continuing restoration
work, as well as several articles covering EL passenger operations. We have
expanded the Diner Digest to allow for inclusion of articles covering the
history of EL through-line passenger operations, the equipment, and personal
accounts from passengers who rode the service.
The Diner Digest will also be published four times this year. Don't miss an
issue!
Kind regards,
John Boehner, VP-Operations
