I have to ask:
 
What advantages did the U34CH bring over the FP45? Was it GE's financing  
prowess, did the EL elements of dissatisfaction with their fleet of 45-series  
locomotives, or did NJ end up with the final say with politics playing a major  
role?

The EL did consider three proposals  from EMD, including the FP45 and an
SDP40.

Some day I will write my  definitive article on the U34CHs and Comet I cars
where all this stuff will  be detailed. I have two big fat folders of
material on these  topics.
