RE: (erielack) commuter train engines



Even though the State subsidized the purchase of the units, I think they
relied heavily on the operating expertise of the railroads to make their
decisions. The CNJ's GP40Ps were the heaviest 4-axle diesels built at the
time. Why? Who knows!
 
The EL actually took bids from both GE and EMD and went through thorough
performance characteristic testing on units before settling on the U34CH.

If the state was subsidizing the purchase of commuter engines for EL and
CNJ, why didn't the state buy the same type of engines for both railroads,
instead of U34CH's for EL and GP40P's for CNJ?  Were there operating reasons
of some sort?  Perhaps it was because the state wasn't yet actually
operating the trains, just subsidizing the operations?
