Al Holleuffer asked about past fantrips on Erie-Lackawanna. Some that I
personally rode on were--July 22, 1973- NKP # 759- dubbed "The Scranton Flyer" from
Hoboken to Scranton and return. This was the infamous alleged "greased
rails", which caused a stall on the grade to Mt. Pocono. After several attempts to
get moving, E-L decided to rescue the train by sending two diesels from
Scranton to hook up and pull us west. October
18, 1981-NJT's U34-CH (doubleheaded)-numbers not recorded-"The Erie Limited" so
called-Hoboken to Port Jervis and return. This trip ran west on the Bergen
County and east on the Main Line thru Paterson.
August 19, 1984-M&E # 16 AND
17-"Farewell to the MU's" -Hoboken to Dover including the Gladstone and old
Montclair Branch. The consist was made up of E-L MU's being retired. July 30,
1988-NKP # 765 westbound and (3) M&E Alco's eastbound -Hoboken to Port Jervis and
return. This trip was marked by incredible heat. In addition to these trips,
C&O # 614 was used on several trips over several years in the late 90's between
Hoboken and Port Jervis. Dom Mele (ELT&HS #165)
