Ed,
As I recall, there wasn't alot of physical changes that I observed lineside, 
but I'm sure there was alot going on 'behind the scenes' in the days leading 
up to C-day...

I do remember George Maxwell's farewell trip came back east after traveling 
the system out west, returning to Hoboken on a Sunday afternoon via the 
Boonton Line..  Having acquired my first 4-channel crystal scanner, I 
remember hearing the Hoboken Dispatcher talking to a 'passenger special' on 
the Boonton Line, so I decided to head down to Little Falls to see what it 
was.  Standing just east of the station, an e/b freight came by, and then 
several minutes later EL E8 #833 pulling 3 passenger cars (with the last car 
being observation car #300) came by shortly afterwards... it was some weeks 
later that I learned that this was George Maxwell's return leg of his 
farewell trip...
