Re: (erielack) Mystery Photo Location
Well, Neil, I wish that it were - but the 'garden village' only had the
typical DL&W wooden station with the freight section at one end (in the case
of WP at the South end), the agent office in the center, and the waiting
room for passengers in the North end of the building. No signal at the
station nor was there a concrete bumping block. Just the 2 mainline tracks
and the siding at the south end of the station where there was a concrete
platform raised to the level of a boxcar floor to facilitate unloading of
(among other things) new (1950) Chevrolets for Roy Stauffer's dealership on
Wyoming Avenue.
There was a signal for the Northbound track just south of the
Tunkhannock Ave. crossing. I was trying to remember this from when I worked
on the train that went to Northumberland & back overnight. It was the
practice to wait there with the engines just off the highway crossing until
we got the clearance from Coxton to cross the Lehigh Valley on the other
side of the river - otherwise you'd tie up all the street crossings in West
Pittston if the LV held you up. I finally found an old B&W foto I took of
the station looking toward Exeter and you can faintly see the high signal
just past Tunkhannock ave. crossing. The concrete base is probably still
there.
Regards,
Walter E. Smith
