Re: (erielack) Re: EL List Daily V3 #1955

Todd,

Never noticed the stone wall, but you're right that both the Morris Canal
and the DL&W curved around Garrett Mountain in the same spot, although the
DL&W, of course, followed what is I-80 now (easterly direction before
curving sharply south), whereas the Morris Canal came in on a more
southeasterly direction. I'm curious if in fact the Canal was up against
the mountain and the tracks adjacent (or vice versa) and where the DL&W
crossed the canal. This would not have been far from where the station was
in Paterson.

Chuck

Roughly four miles of I-80 between Mountain View and Paterson,
including the old Paterson High Bridge over the Passaic River. NJDoT
wanted part
of the route for the highway and offered to provide a single track through
the area, but they would have provided no money to EL. EL opted to get
money and no track.

How diffrent things would have been had they retained that short
section of single track! Speaking of this portion of abandonded ROW, anyone
ever notice the old stone wall that is visible just east of Garret Mountian
off Route 80 eastbound? I don't think its former DL&W. It could be an old
retaining wall from the Morris Canal since it also used the exact same
route to get around the mountian. Keep an eye out for it next time you pass
through the area. This time of year it's easy to spot.
I still recall back in the early 90's the State of NJ began
construction of the sound barrirers in West Paterson. Just east of the
former Highbridge workers actually unearthed a large section of Lackawanna
rail along the eastbound embankment! I happened to be passing by in slow
traffic as they all stood there with a puzzled look on their faces :)
