It was - when they were going to the scrappers.  Main rods removed...

Basically, most of the 'auxiliary' functions on steam engines were driven
by steam.  On modern steam engines, that included the lubrication system
(so the engineer didn't have to walk around the engine at every stop and
oil it).  No steam, no lubrication, lots of damage to bearings...
