Re changing gear ratios on traction motors.
1. The gear cases no matter what the ratio had the same mounting
dimension. and the motor shaft to axle distance was the same.
2. The pinion could be taken off the motor shaft without removing the
armature from the frame. The pinions had a tapered bore and the shaft a
taper with a circumferentil groove. The shaft had a rightangle hole
then went in the center and out to the face. A hydaulic pump would be
screwed into the end of theshaft and hydralic pressure would pop the
pinion off the shaft.
3. The pinion would be heated to a precise temperature and placed on
the shaft at a precise location. The pinion would shrink and be held
much tighter than any press fit could have done..
