Re: (erielack) FW: ABT on the E8 freight units
Dear SGL,
I was passing on what was verbally related to me, it seemed like the
transition set up, (the hardware details of which I am unaware), was the
primary hurdle in the passenger to freight changeover. The traction motor
cases were all identical and just the gear sets were changed, as most folks
may be aware E units were twin prime mover, each V-12/generator set attached
to one truck, a big difference when comparing an SD with one V16/Alt or gen
to all traction motors. I was referring to the initial action taken, It is
entirely possible that later parts, as in E9 electrical componants were
added to some units, hopefully a copy of the EL instructions can someday be
located and posted, they are not in any ETT's . I am going to peruse the
EMD E8 enginemans manual to see if I can glean any info out regarding
transition in the E8 locomotives. I hope as we go along we all can gain more
knowledge as this aspect of the EL is really interesting, and shows how our
EL tried mightily to stay solvent be it's use of motive power in changing
demands and circumstances. I hope that clarifies the ABT issue a bit. And I
haven't even started to look into the operation of the PA's yet... But I
think it's a great topic to pursue.
Bill
