Re: (erielack) Mountainville

Mountainville at one time had a small mill, coal shed, a section house,
freight house and bunk house. The station would have also served as a train
order site. However I suspect its most important functions were to serve as
a milk stop and for summer vacationers. Passenger service on the Short Cut
ended in April 1936, and the line was abandoned about a year later, except
from Vails Gate Jct. to West Cornwall-Enderlin-Idlewild (the name was
changed several times.) The station there is also in existance and is the
office of a coal dealer. This company received shipments until 1956. The
track to it was torn up about 1961, but part relaid to the floor tile
factory near VG a couple years later. This factory ceased operating
sometime this summer. However the entire right of way of the Short Cut is
intact because Central Hudson has a gas pipeline along it.
Not far from the West Cornwall station was a spur to what I believe was a
sand bank, part of what is now the Storm King Art center. Also there is a
huge sand & gravel operation just north of the Woodbury Viaduct., adjacent
to both the Graham line and Short Cut. Cars were loaded and shipped from a
siding there until at least 1970. There were two other stations on the
Short Cut: Woodbury, near the viaduct, and Houghton Farm, which simply
served a single farm near the Thruway crosing below Mountainville. Very
small station!
