(erielack) Erie 1899 and 1935 service on the Piermont Branch

I got so intrigued by this recent Piermont Branch activity on our list that
I went down to my "archives".
My 1899 Erie system timetable showed six trains a day in each direction over
the Piermont. Four just went between Suffern and Spring Valley, the other
two were Suffern-Sparkill trains. There were only two trains each way on
Sunday: these went the distance between Suffern and Sparkill. The latter
distance was 15.9 miles; weekday trains did it in from 39-45 minutes while
one Sunday train took an hour (a Bullet Train it was not!).
The 1935 Official Guide shows the evolution of building and service. That
line north from Spring Valley through Pomona and Thiells went all the way to
Haverstraw. One passenger train in each direction did the extra miles from
Spring Valley to Haverstraw. There was also impressive activity on that line
to New City: 8 trains in each direction to and from Nanuet, where they were
scheduled to meet the Spring Valley trains.
As an aside, there was also parlor car service on a train from Jersey to
Newburgh!
Really fascinating stuff stimulated by this List!
