(erielack) EL in the 2-10-06 ABPR



This is one of the older channel-sill 85' piggyback cars built around 1960,
I don't know which builder (either ACF or P-S). The raised portion of the
sidesill with the perforations was for attaching "disaster chains" to the
trailer wheels, a holdover practice from earlier cars which used a
time-consuming system of blocks and chains for securing trailers. By the
mid-60's, there was a consensus that the combination of locking hitch and
trailer weight was sufficient to keep the trailer in position, so the use of
chains was discontinued.

is behind the engines?
