Re: (erielack) Water spur

That makes sense. NS can't be very optimistic about the chances of
rebirth. In fact, it seems only a matter of time before the Totowa
Industrial itself goes by the wayside. Who would imagine that back in EL
days given the number of customers on that section of track that used to be
part of the Boonton Branch.

NJDOT might have required NS to contribute something towards an upgrade,
and NS decided that the revenue stream from the cars didn't support it.
Many water utilities have gone to dry chemicals trucked in.

As far as I know, NS could have pushed NJDOT to upgrade (or at least

but they either didn't know about it--or care. They probably have

      Gary Kazin asked:

Water for public use is chlorinated and fluoridated.
            Chemicals for both
would be shipped by rail. Sodium hypochlorite, commonly used
            as bleach,
can be shipped as pellets in cars designed to pneumatically
            convey the
pellets into the plant, or dissolved in water in tank cars.
            Fluoride can
also be shipped as pellets or solution.

I believe the rail traffic was solely chlorine in tank cars. The sad
      thing
is right after rail traffic was embargoed there, I saw tank trailers
      parked
next to the chlorine tanks on the property. They'd park them RIGHT ON
      THE
TRACKS WHERE THE TANK CARS USED TO BE UNLOADED. Bah. :(

Anyhoo, in happier times, attached are some excellent shots by Rich
      Campana
of GP35 2581 shoving a chlorine tank car onto the property (the one
      shot
with all the trees in front of the train is on the water treatment
      plant
property - note the building at far left), and also crossing Route 46
      and
going through the industrial area between Rt. 46 and the facility.
      Never to
      be seen again. :(
