The unit trains were for the most part, received from western connections at
Chicago, although some may have come off the N&W (Wabash) at Huntington IN.
At Portland they were broken into 26 car cuts for Martin's Creek.

Con Agra received wheat year round. During the Great Lakes shipping season
it moved by boat to Buffalo and then in EL grain hoppers to Martins Creek in
blocks of 10 or more cars. During the off season the grain moved in unit
trains. Jim Boyd missed the first half of the train going up the hill by the
time he got their. The first 26 cars went up the hill with 3 units on the
point( 7AM job Condr John Morykin) and would be pushed to Steir by the 6AM
Portland Hole Job Condr Kern. Min tender was 52 cars, IIRC, but most trains
seemed to be 54 to 56 cars. Con Agra supplied the empty cars for loading and
I think they sent a couple of extra cars incase any of the empty cars got
bad ordered before being spotted for loading. Con Agra during the EL days
did not get any trains in over 60 cars. BTW, reason for 26 cars on first cut
was that was how many fit in the mill at one time for unloading.

Cargill purchased some of the assets of the Agway feed division in 2005
following Agway's bankruptcy. As far as I know the petroleum business
is still Agway, but all the feed mills have been sold or closed.
A previous post said Martin's Creek got 54 car blocks in the 1970's.
The recent Railfan & Railroad article and some postings on here talk
about 26 car blocks.
In the 1970-1990's , grain rates were quoted for single car, 26, 52, and
104 car blocks, 104 being a full train. I think it was Bob Stafford
said that the cars came from Buffalo in the winter time. Did Martins
Creek get a full 104 car train delivered 26 cars at a time from some
place close Martins Creek, or did they only get 26 or 54 cars that were
essentially 1/2 or 1/4 of a train dropped off and delivered by the
local to Martins Creek?
Did they receive year round, or only in winter? And where did the cars
come from if not Buffalo?
