Well, I'll be darned. They got the quotes correct :-). To add a bit, I don't remember seeing any purple wine cars at BTM - only common (Coach or Pullman or Road Grime) green. I think they were GAPX General American Pfaudler cars, probably converted from milk service. I was working for the NYC at the time, and I don't know how the Erie (it was still Erie in 1960) handled them from the west, but I doubt that they were in passenger trains. The wine was not really perishable, and the stuff that moved in tank cars was not so valuable that a day or two in transit made a major dent in the cost of carrying inventory (unlike silk, where it made a big difference). The brakes on any passenger-equipped car can be easily set up for compatibility with freight equipment.
