The Erie (and later EL) ran many baseball excursions from Youngstown to Cleveland each season. I remember riding several as a Boy Scout. Trains would have two units---such as PA's or the locally famous 900-901 Alco Road Switchers, and two 1000 series coaches and about a dozen Stillwell coaches. There was no need for food service on a run that consumed less than two hour's running time. The train would leave from Youngstown, stopping at Niles, Warren, Garrettsville, Mantua and Aurora. The scouts would walk from CUT to the old Municipal Stadium. Games lasted about two hours and the trip would return. These trips were usually operated on a Saturday when coaches were available as the regular Cleveland service trains were reduced in size on Saturday and Sundays. Also, P&LE coaches were frequent on these specials, being used from the Cleveland-Youngstown-Pittsburgh pool. P&LE coaches were always stored at the Erie's North Avenue Coach Yard in Youngstown. The trips were usually to the games that had the Washington Senators or the Detroit Tigers playing the Tribe. There were plenty of seats available when these teams played.
