Most of it was steam coal, and the eastern railroads themselves were large customers. I find this statement to be intriguing (not so much the eastern rr part), but the Erie & DL&W one. With the extensive trackage and business that both roads had in NE PA (i.e. Scranton / Wilkes Barre) and the Erie in other parts of central / western PA, why did they have such a need for the steam coal delivered by the P&S? Or were they interchanging it for delivery to other eastern roads? Was the coal delivered by the P&S from the ARM that superior to other steam coal in PA and other eastern states? Also, if the latter was the case, then to whom was it delivered? Most of the other eastern roads had routes / connections to the coal producing regions in PA, WV, Kentucky, OH etc. (e.g. PRR, NYC, LV, RDG, B&O, D&H, CNJ, etc.). My guess is the RR's they were 'ferrying' it to would be the likes of the New England roads (e.g. NH, B&M, MEC, B&A, etc.) or the Canadian and mid-western roads (e.g. CN, CP, TH&B, NKP, PM, WAB, etc.) that interchanged through Buffalo. Your comments and additional information will be most appreciated.
