One of the largest, if the not the largest customers for the DL&W was the Wickwire steel works in Cortland, NY on the Syracuse branch. I'm not up on the company history as I'd like to be, but there were other Wickwire, later Wickwire-Spencer facilities throughout the country. Although the line was located directly on the Lehigh Valley, it was primarily served by the Lackawanna. The plant was large enough to warrant its down switching engine (an 0-6-0 and later a diesel). Shutdown by 1970, the buildings were soon demolished except for a large ware house on the other side of South Main Street. Tonight that building is engulfed in a massive fire, ending a long history. Thanks to E. Robb for sharing news of the fire.
