Chris,

The pipe doesn't go to the switch machine, it goes to a propane heater. 
That is what the metal shield is covering as well. If you look in the 
right center of the pictures coming towards Lou, there is a white 
propane tank. If you look at the final going away shot the pipe ends 
opposite of the other turnout which also has a switch heater.
