Vandalized Port Jervis railroad cars may be removed soon

Interior of the cars are littered with trash and
covered with graffiti

A line of seven old Metro-North railroad cars parked for two years on
tracks in the West End rail yards of Port Jervis, have become shelter for
homeless people and a place for partying by young people.

The cars have graffiti sprayed on both the inside and outside. Some of the
writing on the interior walls talks of Satan, hell and dying. The seats
are torn up and ripped off their mounts. Broken glass from light bulbs is
strewn all over the floors, which also have broken liquor bottles, condom
wrappers and other garbage all over. There are a couple of blankets, pots
and pans, burned candles and a toilet that had been ripped from its mount.

Orange County Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Council Executive Director James
Conklin took a first hand look at the situation yesterday. “Once known
about, once identified, the safest possible scenario for the community is
to get these things out of here,” he said. “We wouldn’t want to be out
here doing an interview as they are removing a young person to the
hospital or worse, from something that occurred out here. It’s just very,
very dangerous.”

The good news, said Mayor Gary Lopriore, is that the cars should finally
be removed this coming weekend. A representative of the railroad told him
the train cars would be removed to another location on Saturday.
“Hopefully that will solve out problem that has been a real sore problem
for the last couple of years.”

Residents in the neighborhood near the tracks have long complained about
the problems of night time activities going on in the abandoned cars. They
credit city hall with not giving up the fight to rid the city of those
railroad cars.
