In the summer of 1970, I was working the extra board as a 'switchman'. When I was called in, it was usually third trick, and it was usually to get lunch at 1am for the switcher crew - actually I was the 5th person meeting the full crew laws that still prevailed in New Jersey. One night I was called to 'flag' the tunnel on the Jersey Ciity side. A track crew was doing maintenenace on the track. I arrived, talked to the forman who told me there were no engines in Jersey City, so I could go home after an hour or two. In other words, there was no way that any traffic could go Westbound on that track that evening, but someone still needed to be called out to flag the track. Is it any wonder that bankrupcy was not far away?! - -bruce alcock OK N-Rail Don't ask what a former EL employee (only 2 sumers) is doing in Oklahoma. However, having moved to the town of Tuttle, through which the Frisco ran, I have developed an interest in the St. Louis - San Fransisco and model that line as well as EL and NYC. Of the three roads, the ELHS (ELH&TS or whatever...) has got to be the best! That map of the East end is fantastic! And this list is great - and I still do take pictures of EL locomotives, except now, they are N scale.....
