I've always wondered (as have lots of others) why EL was so eager to cede
the Boonton line row in Paterson for I-280 when they must have had some inkling

imagine the clearance-restricted Kingsland tunnel was a big factor. Do you
know the actual vertical clearance?

It was Erie Management, thinking that the Erie side would always see all the
freight and that the Scranton side would get by with there one or two trains
in each direction ok.
I'm sure the state ( federal ) money urged for complete abandonment around
Garret Mt, as opposed to trying to share the right of way, which I was told
once that they were willing to do if they had to. It was Rt 80 not 280.
Kingsland tunnel wouldn't permit auto rack but it wasn't a restriction for
normal cars. Remember an anxious moment for all the crew when we took an
extended height box car through the tunnel in the early 80 with the Trainmasters
urging, when we all said it wouldn't fit. Engineer went 10 MPH and we never
touched. Don't remember what the exact height restriction on it was. I bet
it's more restrictive today than it was back then.
