I may have this wrong, and anyone feel free to correct me, cause i"m going  
on memory here, from what others have told me.   I believe the north  ward 
facing connection was so Erie passenger trains could come from there old  storage 
yards, under the archway ramps and just east of the tunnel,   and access 
Hoboken terminal.
 
I did have a NYC west shore man tell me they use to interchange banana  cars 
with the Lackawanna, but he may have ment early EL, on that connection  track. 
 Can't remember if they were receiving or delivering??   :(
